Real Madrid are keen to keep former Arsenal lender Martin Odegaard at the club for next season, according to reports in Spanish publication AS.
The Norwegian was a success during his brief spell in the Emirates, where the youngster impressed with his ability to play. But the 22-year-old has since returned to Madrid where it looks like he is set to play a big role under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
AS report the Gunners want the midfielder back in London. But the player has had conversations with Ancelotti, and it looks like he’s been guaranteed more playing time.
It’s a big blow to Arsenal’s chances of signing the Norway international as he is the club’s main target in solving their creativity issues. But the response from North London fans to this has been a bit surprising, with many happy with the news.

Although statistically, Odegaard may not have had the biggest impact on the Gunners, but the youngster has been a key contributor. As for manager Mikel Arteta, he was the player he wanted to be the link between midfielder and attack.
There are other options related to the actual player preferring to stay at his parent club. One of them is Leicester City’s James Maddison and although the two are different types of players, they will play the same kind of roles.
It remains to be seen who the Gunners can fill the creative void in the Emirates. But they need someone who can play in the middle because that will also take a lot of pressure off Emile Smith-Rowe.
While there is still time in the transfer window, it looks like the Norwegian’s future is in Madrid and that means Arteta will have to look elsewhere to find a player to fill the role. Arsenal admire Odegaard and would like to get him back, but with the appointment of Ancelotti it is likely that the 22-year-old will be given a bigger role for the Spanish giants.
